La broma infinita by David Foster Wallace (3 star ratings)

An impossible endeavor, but it must be witnessed. World says what it usually does. DFW is a writer who is almost preternaturally attuned to the register?

There’s a definite bravery involved in trying to use irony ,a move past irony towards sentiment. I actually really liked most of IJ, but I also found it incredibly frustrating. I think I’d feel differently jnfinita I’d stopped at pagebecause I thought the whole central part was working terrifically.

A couple years ago, somehow I stumbled on this site and realized, very quickly, what a tremendous opportunity it presented. Nowhere, not fast, but slowwwly.

Potete piegarvi o spezzarvi. The novel touches on many topics, including addiction to drugs, but also to sex and famewithdrawal, recovery, death, fostdr relationships, absent or dead parents, mental health, suicide, sadness, entertainment, film theory, media theory, linguistics, science, Quebec separatism, national identity, and tennis as a metaphysical activity.

It’s a good book that has amazing moments. My point is that all that irony and self-reflection often works as an escape from the task of actually living in the world with other people. Naming this critique an Infinite Mess I don’t think would be appropriate. I’m not going to put any footnotes in my review though because every other person on goodreads has done that and it’s just not clever anymore. In the novel the structure is built in the shape of the human brain.

For me personally the experience of reading this book had super intense ups and downs. So I took my righteous fury to an obscure book forum on the internet and vented my frustrations, determined to either draw out like-minded Infinite Jest haters or succumb to the realization that I was not as intelligent as I liked to believe. I definitely can’t say that I connected all the dots in the story, and I don’t care!

The main point being if the audience starts clapping the second the music ends you have performed poorly. I can’t even right now.

beoma I’m not falling back into realism like a certain contemporary with designs on greatness. Okay so on bdoma endnotes. Okay this book was actually not recommended to me by greg and Karen, although I think greg recommended it once. Wallace’s “encyclopedic display of knowledge” [6] incorporates media theorylinguistics, film studies, sport, addiction, science, and issues of national identity. Return to Book Page. Its size and complexity make it forbidding and esoteric.

Interesting choices with regard to the subsidized calendar years. View all 4 comments. It certainly made me glad that I indulge in nothing stronger than coffee and the occasional non-narcotic painkiller. How inconsiderate of me. Cheeses, Infinota, for someone who just wants to put this behind him, you sure have a way of dragging this out As interesting as the Gang of 59, when supplemented by Friends and the Followed who’ve marked this book To Read, is a rather interesting little non-list, conspicuous in their lack of interest, almost as if they know better.

Siate uno Studioso del Gioco. There are a bunch of types.

Infinite Jest is regarded as a literary bestseller, having sold 44, hardcover copies in its first year of publication. I first read IJ about ten years back and decided to reread it this fall.

If you could somehow smash it into smaller pieces, there would certainly be no way to put it back together again. You can get a pretty good idea, I think, of what happens”. My job is to make some sense of it.

But just as the master film-maker does not seem to take his own oeuvre seriously, so Wallace taunts us with the thought that this wwllace magnum opus might be merely a hair-of-the-shaggy-dog-that-bit-you story.

I can fully appreciate the qualities in the writing that might attract an enthusiast to persist through the remaining six hundred pages, but for fosteg part, I have formed a judgement that in the same time I can read a number of fine books by other writers and that is what I would prefer to broa.

But I have to say that the “wit” of the whole “Year of the Depends Undergarment” gag doesn’t even sustain the first pages, and may cause ocular damage from repeated eyeball-rolling before I finish this sucker.
